Breaking the Cycle of Poverty, One Family at a Time

My Life for Lives: Helping Selma Build a Dignified Bathroom

At My Life for Lives, we believe that dignity begins with the basics—access to clean water, sanitation, and safe living conditions. Today, we are launching a special project to help Selma and her family build a proper bathroom, something they have never had.

Selma’s Story

Selma is part of the Quilombola community, a group of Afro-Brazilian descendants who have fought for generations to preserve their land and culture. She lives with her husband and children in a simple home, sustained mostly by small-scale farming. When work is available, they earn around 60 Brazilian Reais per day (approximately 15 CAD), but job opportunities are scarce, leaving them dependent on government aid to survive.

Despite the challenges, Selma is a strong and humble woman who strives to provide the best life possible for her family. However, their current living conditions lack one of the most basic human needs: a bathroom. Without one, they are forced to bathe using a bucket and relieve themselves in the forest, exposing them to health risks and discomfort.

The Project: A New Bathroom for Selma’s Family

Through this initiative, My Life for Lives aims to build a functional and safe bathroom for Selma and her family. This project will provide them with:

• Proper sanitation facilities to improve their health and hygiene.
• Privacy and dignity, especially for the children.
• A safer and more comfortable home environment.

For the past nine years, Projeto Sertão Vivo has been dedicated to improving the lives of families in rural Araripina, Pernambuco. Through unwavering commitment and hard work, the project has made a tangible impact in education, sanitation, housing, and community development. 2024 was another year of remarkable achievements, reinforcing our mission to create sustainable change.

Milestones and Achievements

This year, Sertão Vivo continued its work by implementing critical initiatives that directly benefit the local community. Some of the key accomplishments include:

• Education Support: Over 1,600 school supply kits were distributed to students, ensuring that children have the necessary tools to succeed in their studies.
• Improved Sanitation: The construction of three new bathrooms significantly enhanced hygiene and living conditions for families.
• Expanding Educational Access: Two new classrooms were built in Serra da Rancharia to provide school reinforcement programs, strengthening the quality of education.
• Access to Clean Water: Three cisterns were installed, securing a reliable source of clean drinking water for the community.

The city of Recife has suffered a natural catastrophe in the last two weeks. 100’s of families have lost their homes, cars, and businesses due to this flood. Schools have been completely flooded. Shelters and Daycares have lost their school, food, and resources to help families in extreme poverty. Life for Lives and Brazilfest join forces to raise funds  to support local organizations that need our help!
